Volume 8: The Doorway Papers Series

FAITH AND SCIENCE

Abstract:

The overriding theme in the four Papers in this book is man's position in the universe. A clear understanding of what that position really is, seen in the light of evidences of divine forethought in creation, is important not only in his search for meaning and purpose in life, but for his spiritual well-being.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Preface

PART I

THE UNIVERSE: DESIGNED FOR MAN?

There are excellent reasons for believing that the world we live in did not happen by accident but by design, and that it owes its uniqueness to the character of the Universe as a whole as though the Universe was made for man!

 Introduction
Chapter 1. The Power of God as Creator
Chapter 2. The Immensity of God's Handiwork
Chapter 3. The Wisdom of God as Designer

PART II

SCIENTIFIC DETERMINISM:
DIVINE INTERVENTION

The Universe does indeed look like Newton's perfect watch and this all pervasive mechanism seems to drive God out of his own creation entirely! Can God intervene? Can we discover a pattern of intervention which is reconcilable with a concept of perfect mechanism? Can we account for the Watchmaker's need to 'tinker' while still maintaining he made a perfect watch? Is divine intervention neccessary?

Introduction
Chapter 1. The Nature of the Conflict
Chapter 2. Evidences of Mechanism
Chapter 3. Some Tentative Conclusions

PART III

THE MEDIEVAL SYNTHESIS AND
THE MODERN FRAGMENTATION OF THOUGHT

The Medieval worldview of man's significance in the Universe, which was essentially spiritual, contrasts markedly with the modern worldview, which is essentially technical. A new synthesis is needed; one which recognizes not only man's physical and intellectual dimensions but also his spirtual dimension.

Introduction
Chapter 1. The Medieval Synthesis
Chapter 2. The Modern Synthesis (separated into Section A & Section B)
Chapter 3. History Repeats Itself
Chapter 4. The Fragmentation of Thought and Life
Chapter 5. The Chief End of Man - and the Means
Chapter 6. Toward a Christian World View

PART IV

THE FITNESS OF LIVING THINGS:
SIGNIFICANCE OF DAUERMODIFICATIONS

Just how do living things adjust to changing environments and yet maintain their species? By mutation? Inheritance? Divine intervention? Or is there another alternative?

Chapter 1. How Is Fitness Acquired?
Chapter 2. The Nature of Dauermodifications
Chapter 3. Evidence for Dauermodifications Below Man
Chapter 4. Dauermodifications in Man
